Come Celebrate Niagara with our New Menu

Chef Pascal is thrilled to announce our new summer menu... ripe with fresh mid-day and dinner selections.  We have added more choices, and adjusted our menu to better support our wonderful local & Ontario food producers. Buying locally makes sense, for allot of good reasons:

1.       Fresh and delicious... picked when needed, produced as required, low storage foods simply taste better

1.       Good business... every dollar spent locally generates twice as much income for the local economy, as food purchased from a large supplier

1.       Good for the environment...local food producers reduce the carbon impact of food transportation

1.       Part of a true dining experience... knowing where your food is produced is also a wonderful part of enjoying a meal

Words of Wellness from the Spa

An essential oil I consider a must for everyday use is Tea Tree oil. Also known as Melaleuca Alternifolia, it's uses in skin care, personal wellness, and household cleaning make it an indispensable product for every home and office.

Tea tree oil has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties that make it useful in treating minor cuts and blemishes. Just a tiny dab over affected skin will help prevent infection and speed healing. It penetrates well and is kind to healthy and healing tissues.  You can dab it over a cold sore at the onset to help prevent a full outbreak.

If your skin or scalp is dry, add a few drops to your favourite shampoo, bodywash, or lotion to alleviate itchiness and soothe irritated skin. Often found in head lice products, tea tree oil is effective in eradicating creepy crawlies of all sorts.  In a dilute form, it also makes a great diaper rash remedy.

Tea tree oil also has solvent properties which make it a natural additive for cleaning products. Add a drop to your dishwashing detergent and laundry soap for enhanced cleaning and disinfecting properties.

The Janssen skin care line used in our petite spa has a range of products containing tea tree oil especially designed for acneic, oily, combination, and congested skins. Tea tree oil, aloe vera, and herbal extracts are blended into products that help balance skin for a clear, refreshed complexion

From the past...

The early British postal system required mail to be prepaid by the sender, whereas the American system required recipients to pay postage upon receipt.

Canadian merchants complained bitterly about this inconsistency, and even made illegal use of private courier services that took correspondence for American recipients to the nearest American town for mailing. In evading prepayment of postage in this way, they deprived the British Post Office of revenues.

Daniel Sutherland, Deputy Post-Master General of the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada turned a blind eye to this practice; he preferred the American system, which provided him with substantial income in the form of a 20 per cent commission on all postal revenues he collected for the American Post Office.

Jacob Keefer started Welland Mills (located just a few blocks form the inn) and lived at the site of the present day Keefer Mansion which was built by his nephew. Jacob claimed that his family's considerable fortune was based on this event that appointed him as Thorold 's first postmaster and gave him the right to 20% of all local postal revenues.

Here is a document signed by Daniel Sutherland appointing Jacob Keefer as Thorold 's first Postmaster in 1826
